PlayStation 4 Release Date: Sony Reportedly Working On VR Headset For Next-Gen Gaming Console

Sony is reportedly working on a VR headset that will help PlayStation rival the upcoming release of the Oculus Rift, the VR technology that made waves at this year's E3 2013 gaming conference.

Amid the growing popularity of the Oculus Rift, Sony has been working on a rival device for its next-generation console, clearly acknowledging that, at least in the company's eyes, VR tech is going to be the way of the future for next-generation gaming.

Eurogamer cites multiple unnamed sources close to Sony to report the news. According to them, the Sony VR headset will work in very much the same way as the Oculus Rift. The prototype has reportedly been tested on the PS4 title "DriveClub."

Sony is keeping its lips sealed regarding any details from the project. It was apparently going to make its debut at Gamescom 2013 but was pulled from the lineup at the eleventh hour.

When asked at Gamescom if Sony had any plans to get involved with the new wave of VR headset gaming, Shuhei Yoshida gave the simple yet ominous response "We don't talk about that."

Sony has been exploring alternative viewing technology for quite sometime. In fact, it recently announced the PlayStation Eye camera would be available in a bundle with the next-gen PS4 console. It will make the entire system cost an extra $100 but allows for features similar to that of its rival, Microsoft's Xbox One Kinect. Adding a VR headset to the PlayStation gaming experience will only further the depth of gaming. Imagine a world where you can control the wheel of a car with your DualShock 4 controller but be able to look around the inside of the car and peak at threats and obstacles through the windows simply by moving your head.

Tell us what you think. Would a VR headset made by Sony enhance your gaming experience or can you not get over the additional cost or the foolish look that will come with sporting a VR headset while gaming? Comment and share your thoughts below.
