The next version of Google’s operating system after Jelly Bean will be named "Kitkat."
Google’s decision to name their newest software after the famous chocolate product seems to be an advertising coup for Nestle. This surprised many as Google previously claimed that their next operating system will be named Key Lime Pie.
However, Google clarified that there is no monetary transaction affecting their decision.
"This is not a money-changing-hands kind of deal," John Lagerling, director of Android global partnerships, told BBC.
Another was the they want to inject an element of surprise and considered it "fun and unexpected."
A partner at the consultancy Prophet named Simon Myers, a branding expert, told BBC that there are possible downsides to their agreement.
He said that the reputation of Google’s operating system Kitkat would be affected by the reputational issues that will emerge in time, whether be it good or bad.
Nestle has encountered a number of criticisms before about how they endorse their powdered baby milk. Nestle has also recalled several of its products. The last one was the dog food that caused salmonella scare in the U.S.
On the other hand, Google also has its own share of controversies, including a report from the U.S. government revealing that malware attacks happen more in Android than any other operating systems.
Google together with its partners in the Open Handset Alliance have called each of their operating systems after tasty delights following the sequence of the alphabet since 2009.
The last three operating systems were Honeycomb, Ice Cream and Jelly Bean.
Google, came up with the name Kitkat instead of Key Lime Pie because only a few know the taste of a Key Lime Pie and Kitkat. The latter is almost everyone’s favorite and one of the snacks people stock in their fridge.
After the consensual decision of the members, Google’s team has contacted Nestle to lay out their plans and get their approval.
