Brooklyn Sinkhole Swallows Intersection

One of Brooklyn's intersections has been swallowed by a sinkhole, and the whole thing was caught on camera. The 20-feet wide hole opened up unexpectedly at 7 a.m. on Tuesday at Fifth Avenue and 64th Street in the neighborhood of Sunset Park, according to ABC News.

A surveillance video from a nearby building captured the entire event, and several witnesses saw the hole open. Morning commuters were surprised by the hole, but nobody was injured.

"It appears to be some sort of water leak that undermined the road, washed away the earth and that's why the street gave way," FDNY Deputy Chief Peter Leicht said.

There is a 48-inch water main line beneath the road that will be investigated for signs of leakage that may have ultimately led to the sinkhole. Water has been disconnected to several buildings along 5th Avenue while crews investigate, according to the Wall Street Journal. Water is expected to be restored Tuesday.

Locals say that the road of the intersection has been in bad shape for a while, according to New York Daily News.

"I've been asking them to look at this," one resident said.
