One Direction's Liam Payne escaped a fire that started in his London apartment on Monday. The boy band member was reportedly in his kitchen while a friend was trying to "refuel" a heater on the balcony when the blaze broke out.
According to the Daily News, the heater caught on fire in turn engulfing the friend and balcony in flames. Payne quickly rushed out to the balcony to help his friend but a source told the newspaper that the boy, identified as Andy Samuels, was already severally burned.
Six fire engines and 35 firefighters responded to the fire. The "Best Song Ever" singer accompanied his friend in the ambulance as he was rushed to the hospital. Samuels still remains in the hospital with second-degree burns but is expected to be ok.
Shortly before the incident Samuels tweeted "Fo' show straight up gangsta BBQ in da clouds ya feel."
The singer has been busy touring in the United States with the other One Direction members to promote their movie "One Direction: This Is Us." He had returned home to London a few days before the incident to celebrate his 20th birthday with his new girlfriend, Sophia Smith, and his friends.
Hours after the incident Samuels' girlfriend tweeted thanking everyone for their support and concern.
"Thank you so much for all your lovely messages & prayers. On behalf of Andy's family & I we'd like you to know he is in stable condition."
According to Britain's Sky News, the singer and his friend were not the only two people in the apartment at the time of the incident, Two men and a woman were also treated for burns.
"Firefighters worked quickly and professionally to get the fire under control as quickly as possible," London Fire Brigade's Laurie Kenny told the newspaper. "Around 30 people left the building before we arrived and were not injured."
"Two of the occupants had superficial burns to their hands and the third had burns to his hands and face," Kenny continued. "All three have been taken to hospital."
Ironically, in the One Direction documentary Payne revealed that if his music career hadn't taken off like it did he would have been a firefighter.
