UPDATE, 2:50 PM: ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that Foster will actually undergo surgery while in Philadelphia on Friday.
Houston Texans running back Arian Foster is reportedly traveling to Philadelphia to get a second opinion on his groin injury, according to Tania Ganguli of ESPN. While Foster has surgery tentatively scheduled for Monday, it sounds as though the veteran running back would like to exhaust all potential options before going under the knife. Ian Rapoport of NFL.com revealed that Foster will be traveling to the City of Brotherly Love to meet with Dr. William Myers, who he dubs the "expert on sports hernias."
All that was known of Foster's injury was that it was groin-related and "serious in nature." We may now know that he's actually dealing with a hernia. Inguinal hernias are almost always dealt with via surgery, but if they're small enough they can also heal on their own. It sounds as though Foster is hoping that a small hernia may mean he won't have to undergo a procedure.
Foster, since leading the league in carries in 2011, has missed 11 games over the last two seasons. He's currently slated to miss more, depending on the outcome of his visit to Philly.
The Texans were said to be eyeing former Saints running back Pierre Thomas and, further, likely to sign him, but even after a "great" workout on Wednesday, the team and Thomas were unable to come to terms on a deal as announced by his agent, Lamont Thomas.
It may not have been money that kept Thomas from signing on in Houston though, as Dianna Marie Russini of ESPN is reporting that Chris Polk may be in line for the top spot on the Texans running back depth chart. Per Russini, the team was enamored with Polk even before the Eagles rescinded his restricted tender and were "all over him" once he hit the open market.
With Foster down, she expects him to be the one to "hold down the fort."
Polk, 25, has appeared in 15 and 14 games over the past two seasons with the Eagles. While he only garnered 11 and 48 carries in those two years, he scored a whopping eight touchdowns - seven rushing and one on a kick return.
There's no doubting Polk's abilities, despite the fact that, like Foster, he was an undrafted free agent. But also like Foster, he comes with ample injury concerns.
