Beijing police found a newborn baby girl inside a toilet on Sunday. The police received a call alerting them about a baby's cries coming from a public toilet block, according to local media platform People's Daily. Local police officer Qian Feng, who responded to the scene, said the baby seemed to have slipped inside a horizontal pipe.
"There is a right-angled pipe inside the train, and the baby was almost trapped in the horizontal pipe," said Qian said, CNN reports.
He was hesitant to pull the baby out for fear that she would be injured. He considered breaking down the toilet but decided against it because it would take too long.
"The baby's head was pointing downwards and her whole body had already fallen into the drain. We could only see the baby's feet from the side," Feng said.
Acknowledging the urgency of the situation, Feng decided to try to pull her out.
"She just kept crying. I looked again, and thought we should try to pull her out even if the possibility might be slim," he said.
Qian reached his right hand into the toilet bowl and pulled the baby girl out by her leg. Fortunately, he was able to get her out safely.
The baby was wrapped in a cloth and taken to a nearby hospital. She was found to have stable vital signs, and she had no physical defects, People's Daily reports.
The police are now looking for the baby girl's mother. Speculation arose that the mother gave birth to the baby in the toilet because blood was found on the sides of the toilet bowl, but it has not been confirmed, according to Shanghaiist.
