Bluetooth Smart innovator, Cambridge Silicon Radio (CSR), unveiled what it claims to be the world's thinnest wireless touch surface that can be used to extend the touch interface of a smartphone or a tablet.
As the technology grows, devices get more handy, small and advanced. That is the motto for any tech firm to reach out to its customers with incredible inventions. In the end, anything that can offer comfort in use is always appreciated. With this in mind, a Cambridge tech firm unveiled an exceptionally thin wireless touch surface for smartphones, tablet PCs or even computers.
The Cambridge Silicon Radio (CSR), which specializes in wireless technology, has introduced a device it claims to be the world's thinnest wireless touch surface. The flexible keyboard measures just 0.5mm thin, which is 6.5 times thinner than Microsoft's 3.25 mm lightweight Touch Cover. The keyboard functions are incredible. Users can use the CSR's Surface keyboard for normal functioning on a tablet such as swipe, pinch, zoom and many other complex gestures, which cannot be done using a standard surface keyboard, according to Paul Williamson, director of Low Power Wireless at CSR.
The keyboard also recognizes handwriting and sketches with a nib of a modified pen. The paper-thin keyboard uses CSR1010® chip to connect wirelessly with iOS and Android 4.x devices, Mac OS X "Mavericks" and Windows 8 PCs.
"Consumers want innovative, portable wireless accessories that just work with their mobile devices," Paul Williamson, Director of Low Power Wireless at CSR, said in a press release. "The ultra-thin touch surface we've developed is a perfect example of how Bluetooth Smart can give them just that. We're committed to working collaboratively with developers using the CSR µEnergy platform to help them bring similar next-generation accessories to the market quickly."
Despite the wireless connectivity, the device's touch latency has been reduced to 12 milliseconds, which acts almost instantly.
Williamson added that the current model is just a prototype and a quick look at the future of the product. "We might see lots of shapes and sizes, some as small as iPad Mini or a larger, more rigid form for a desktop PC, which could be curved, in any colour way, transparent or fitted with a leather folio," he added.
CSR's wireless technology is responsible for many other successful products such as the popular Beats headphones, Nike+ SportWatch and the Jambox speaker.
The new Surface keyboard will be unveiled at IFA Berlin this Friday.
