Angelina Jolie Pitt is hard at work on her fifth directorial project, "By the Sea." She also costars in the film alongside her husband, Brad Pitt, and she recently spoke about how difficult it was for them to take on the challenging role of a married couple that is dealing with relationship problems.
"I'd be directing myself and him in a scene where we're having a fight," Jolie Pitt told the Directors Guild of America (DGA), "and I'd be pulling out the parts [of him] that have an aggression toward me or when you're frustrated with each other — it was very heavy."
The film is set in France during the 1970s where former dancer Vanessa (Jolie Pitt) and her writer husband Roland (Pitt) are vacationing, according to IMDB. The couple is unhappy and growing apart until they become involved with newlyweds staying in the same seaside town. In the trailer for the intense romantic drama, the couple get into physical altercations and Jolie Pitt can be seen with tears streaming down her face.
Jolie Pitt described the film as "an art film, the kind of movie that I like to see, but not something I'm usually cast in," according to DGA. The couple filmed "By the Sea" on their honeymoon, and because the plot forces her to be so emotionally raw, she said she doesn't see herself attempting to create more films like this in the future.
"We're proud of ourselves for being brave enough to try it," she told DGA. "I think 'By the Sea' was the hardest film for me because it wasn't [issue-driven]. It's something I probably won't do very much of."
