Prison Break fans rejoice! Fox's co-chairmen and CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman officially confirmed a "Prison Break" sequel is currently in development. The show will see the return of Dominic Purcell as "Lincoln Burrows" and Wentworth Miller as "Michael Scofield," despite the latter's ultimate fate on the original drama series, according to IGN.
"I would describe it as a bit of a sequel; it picks up the characters several years after we left them in the last season of the show," Walden told reporters at the Television Critics Association's semi-annual press tour.
"The brothers will be back. Some of the iconic characters from that show will be back. It definitely will address some questions that were set up at the end of the series and for a new audience... It'll start after where we left the Scofields in the final season," according to E!.
Initially, the Fox bosses said writer Paul Scheuring would ignore the events of the "The Final Break" a direct-to-video follow-up of the original series, in which Michael Scofield (Miller) dies, but Walden backtracked, Time reported.
"I don't think he's going to completely ignore what happened in that episode, but what he pitched to us was a very logical and believable explanation in the world of 'Prison Break' for why are character's alive and still moving around the world," Newman said.
"He had a very detailed incredible story for why these characters become relevant again and why they're back," he added.
Even though the "Prison Break" revival series is still in its development stages, Newman and Walden are confident that it would directly go to series once Scheuring has finished working on the 10-episode series.
