Angry Orchard Hard Cider: Recall Issued Over Possible Bottle Explosion

The Angry Orchard Cider Company announced Tuesday that they were conducting a voluntary recall on certain 24oz and 12oz bottles of their Angry Orchard Crisp Apple Hard Cider. The affected cases were sold in 12-packs and 6-packs.

The move is a precautionary measure taken after the company received reports of bottles breaking and overflowing upon being opened, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

These instances occur because of refermentation in the bottles. There is an increase in carbonization levels that causes an increase in pressure inside the bottles. This leads to the potential for the glass bottles to crack open and explode, the Associated Press reported.

The affected batches of cider were produces on June 15 and June 29 of this year, according to the FDA.

Angry Orchard assured consumers in a company press release that the cider itself was not a health risk.

"While the impacted cider poses no health risk if consumed, the team at Angry Orchard took this measure to ensure that products available to consumers meet their high quality standards," they said, according to CNBC.
