San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith, speaking with KGO in San Francisco after being released from jail early Friday, denied that he was driving under the influence after his most recent arrest. Via ProFootballTalk:
"The people who are faithful remain faithful," Smith said. "Simple as this: Justice will be served, the truth will come out, there's no DUI. I'm sorry for anybody I let down, I'm sorry for the way this whole thing . . . I need to speak and I want everybody to understand, this wasn't a DUI, the situation I had could have been handled differently and I apologize for everybody I did let down and I apologize for how it all played out. But as far as everything is concerned, it will work out the way it's supposed to work out. That's all."
Smith was arrested for DUI, hit and run and vandalism early Thursday. It marks Smith's fifth arrest and third since 2012. Just last week, new 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula praised the work and renewed focus Smith had shown this offseason.
"I'm really happy for and excited for Aldon," Tomsula said Sunday, via CSN Bay Area reported. "I respect what Aldon's doing and I respect the road he's on. Life throws things at you, man. Sometimes you cause them, sometimes you don't, but things happen. To me, the answer's always in you. The answer's not if it's going to happen or what's going to happen. The answer is always in how you handle it and where you go from there. Own it, fix it, let's go. The work, obviously the shape he's in. You see the conditioning he's doing. I am really excited for Aldon."
After posting bail and proclaiming his innocence to reporters, Smith, per NBC Bay Area, told the assembled media to "leave him alone" and got in a black Mercedes.
