TSA Precheck Program: New Expanded Service Will Allow You to Keep Those Shoes On

If you've ever found yourself standing in line at airport security, hating that one guy who screwed it up for everyone by putting bombs in his shoes back in 2001, the new TSA program is here for you.

TSA Precheck will be expanded to 60 new airports by the end of 2013, in addition to the 40 other locations that currently accept the acceleration program.

According to NBC's Today, pre-approved passengers on the TSA Precheck program can keep on their shoes, belt, jackets and leave laptops in cases. They also don't have to take out some liquids or gels from carry-ons. This program is meant to avoid many of the hassles-including stripping down to the socks-associated with moving through airport security.

"As TSA continues to move away from a one-size-fits-all approach to transportation security, we are looking for more opportunities to provide the most effective security in the most efficient way possible," TSA Administrator John S. Pistole told NBC.

At this time, TSA Precheck members are limited to U.S. citizens who are frequent fliers for select carriers, members of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Trusted Traveler program, or Canadian citizens who are part of the CBP Nexus program.

The TSA announced that by December this year, U.S. citizens outside of these qualifications can also apply for a 5-year membership after paying an $85 fee and submitting fingerprints.

Precheck will now be offered at such airports as Burbank, Oakland, Sacramento and San Jose, the Los Angeles Times reported.

So the next time you're begrudgingly undoing your laces, check out whether you qualify for the Precheck program. You might just be able to skip the line.
