Drone Spotted Near Newark Airport, FAA Reports

While attempting to land at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, four commercial flights reported seeing a drone, according to the Associated Press.

None of the flights had a problem landing on Sunday, but the increase in drone reports near airports is becoming an increasing problem, according to the AP.

The planes were between 2,000 and 3,000 feet in the air at the time of the sightings, and between eight and 13 miles from the airport tarmac, according to the AP.

The sightings occurred just after noon on Sunday, with ExpressJet, Northwest Airlink and two United Airlines Flights reporting sightings, according to NBC New York.

This was at least the third drone sighting reported at airports in the area this month, according to NBC New York.

This is a cause for genuine concern for many passengers, as they hope more can be done to limit the number of unmanned objects, as well as heighten precautions airlines can take if a drone is sighted, according to USA Today.

The FAA currently requires official clearance to fly within five miles of an airport, according to USA Today. It is both unsafe and illegal to fly these drones anywhere near an airplane or any other manned aircraft. Violations of these rule result in fines of up to $25,000 and likely criminal charges, according to NBC New York.
