State Of Emergency Declared In Ferguson

Authorities declared a state of emergency today in St. Louis County in response to recent protests in Ferguson, Mo., according to ABC News.

The announcement comes a day after the first anniversary of Michael Brown's death, a night that ended in gunfire and rampant violence, according to NBC News.

Tyrone Harris was shot by plain clothes police Sunday night after an alleged gunfight broke out between two groups of agitators. He was then seen running across a parking lot before allegedly opening fire on a police vehicle, according to Reuters.

He was charged with four counts of assault on law enforcement, five counts of armed criminal action and one count of shooting a motor vehicle. He was critically wounded in the shooting with police, reported NBC News.

Overnight, three St. Louis Country Police Department officers were injured and two teens were shot near the Michael Brown memorial. Everyone wounded is currently being hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, according to ABC News.

Several other individuals were arrested since violence broke out Sunday night.

These incidents stand in stark contrast to the otherwise peaceful tributes conducted throughout Ferguson.

"Those who terrorize communities with gunfire and commit violence against police officers are criminals, and their reprehensible acts must not be allowed to silence the voices of peace and progress," said Gov. Jay Nixon in a statement released Monday afternoon, according to NBC News.
