Former New England Patriot Tim Tebow is adamant about remaining a quarterback. Tebow reportedly rejected an inquiry from an undisclosed NFL team gauging his interest in playing at another position. As for playing quarterback, even if Tebow considered playing outside the NFL, it appears unlikely he'd find a starting job.
Peter King reported on Thursday during NBC's "2013 NFL Kickoff" show (via RotoWorld) that the unidentified NFL team probed whether Tebow would consider playing in a position other than quarterback. While Tebow wants to remain in the NFL, he is unwilling to play in a different position - such as tight end or halfback.
King also said USA Rugby contacted Tebow about trying his hand at scrum, which he also declined.
The likelihood of Tebow playing in the NFL continues to decrease. The Patriots, under the helm of coaches Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels, appeared to be Tebow's best - and only - shot at finding a spot on an NFL roster.
Belichick is known for using players in different positions, but, given King's report, it's uncertain how willing Tebow was to deviate from playing quarterback - if it was ever an option.
The Canadian Football League (CFL) and Arena Football League have long been potential destinations for Tebow since the Jets released him in April, but Tebow has never shown interest in playing anywhere but the NFL.
Still, even if Tebow did decide to play outside the NFL, he's far from a lock to start for a team.
"If Tim Tebow wants to come to Canada, we'd definitely welcome him," CFL's Montreal Alouettes general manager Jim Popp told ESPN in May. "That's why we have him on our [negotiating] list, and we'd take a look at him and see if he can play in Canada, but it would obviously be competing for a backup job."
The CFL is a pass-happy league, which is why former CFL quarterback and NFL Hall of Famer Warren Moon doesn't think Tebow could even cut it in Canada.
"You have to be able to throw the ball up there, if anything," Moon said in May during a radio interview with KILT-AM, via ESPN. "They throw the ball a lot. It's only three downs, so the passing game is much more important up there, and there's a lot more field to cover.
"If you can't throw the football, it doesn't matter where you play quarterback. You have to be able to throw it. That's his biggest problem, just being able to complete passes, be an accurate passer. I think he's a really good athlete playing the position, but I don't think that's enough sometimes."
Belichick didn't rule bringing back Tebow if any of the team's quarterbacks were injured, but it appears unlikely fans will see Tebow on an NFL field this year.
