Man Falls 80 Feet At Southern California Beach

An unnamed man, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, fell around 80 feet early Tuesday morning at Sunset Cliffs, near Ladera Street, in California.

The fall was reported at 12:20 a.m. Tuesday when the man, who had reportedly been separated from his friends, climbed over a wooden railing where signs warn people to stay away from the cliffs, according to San Jose Mercury News.

Lifeguards and firefighters were able to climb down to the man, who was then airlifted from the beach by a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department helicopter crew. He was flown to UC San Diego Medical Center to be treated for major injuries.

In an official statement, fire department spokesman Lee Swanson revealed the man was conscious when rescuers reached him, but had sustained major injuries and "was not breathing very well," according to CBS' Texas affiliate KWTX 10.

His current condition is unknown.

Officials reported this was the second Sunset Cliff rescue by San Diego lifeguards and firefighters since Friday, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Lifeguards rescued a man who jumped off cliffs near Osprey Street Friday. That man, just like the one in this case, was believed to be under the influence of alcohol.
