MLB News: Milwaukee Brewers GM Doug Melvin Resigns After 13 Seasons; Taking New Role in Front Office

Milwaukee Brewers' general manager Doug Melvin is one of the longest tenured general GMs in the MLB. He has been with the team for 13 seasons since being hired by Bud Selig in September of 2002.

However, Melvin will no longer serve as the team's GM and will instead assume a new role in the front office, according to the team's Twitter account.

Rumors earlier this season unearthed that Melvin was having discussions with Brewers' ownership about being reassigned in the organization. Owner Mark Attanasio will now begin the search for a new general manager as Melvin assumes an advisory position.

"I'm 63 years old and I've been doing this for 20 years," Melvin told Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. "My gut feeling tells me it's time to give Mark the opportunity to look over the next generation of general managers."

"I love what I'm doing; I love Milwaukee. I'd like to see this through as much as I can and get back to playoff baseball," he added, via Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "In May, we sort of came to an agreement. It's a transition for me and my life and a transition that Mark will have to undertake, also."

Melvin served as the general manager of the Texas Rangers from 1994-2001 before arriving in Milwaukee. During his stint in Texas, the Rangers won three division titles, but lost in the first round of the playoffs in each of those seasons (the only three years they made the postseason).

It took a few years for Melvin to turn the Brewers around, but he got them to the postseason in 2008 for the first time since 1981. He was hired as GM the year after the club finished 56-106 and helped reshaped the organization. The Brewers made the playoffs twice under his tenure, including the NLCS in 2011, and took home one NL Central title.
