Seven people were injured when a U.S. Army helicopter crashed while landing onto a Navy ship during training on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. The incident occurred off the southern island of Okinawa, Japan.
The helicopter was damaged in the crash, according to USA Today. Those injured were taken to the U.S. Naval Hospital at Camp Foster.
Everyone aboard the ship was rescued, but the extent of their injuries is not yet known, USA Today reported.
The USNS Red Cloud, the ship where the helicopter attempted to land, was 20 miles off the coast of Okinawa at the time of the accident. Officials are currently investigating the crash, according to CNN.
The increased presence of U.S. troops in and around Okinawa has become a source of tension. More than 50,000 American troops are stationed in the area, and many locals complain about accidents much like these, according to the AP.
In August 2004, a helicopter crashed on a college campus near the Futenma base, injuring three. Two years ago, a helicopter crashed on Camp Hansen leaving one dead and injuring three others, according to the AP.
This incident comes a day after another crash in Bavaria that resulted in a pilot ejecting himself from a falling U.S. fighter jet, according to USA Today.
