Jimmy Carter Has Cancer: Disease Started In Liver And Spread, He Announces

Jimmy Carter's on Wednesday announced that he has cancer that has spread from his liver to other parts of his body, according to CNN.

Carter, 90, served as president of the United States from 1977 to 1981. He had surgery earlier this month to remove a mass from his liver. Doctors believed he would make a full recovery following that surgery. Evidently, they were wrong.

"Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body," Carter said. The former President will receive medical treatment for the cancer at Emory University in Atlanta.

Carter has a history of cancer in his family, according to Slate. His three siblings all died of pancreatic cancer by 1990. The same disease played a part in the deaths of both of his parents.

"A more complete public statement will be made when facts are known, possibly next week," Carter said, according to ABC News.

Since leaving the White House, Jimmy Carter founded the Carter Center. It's based at Emory University. The focus of the Center is to provide public health care. Carter currently makes his home in Georgia.
