Likely thanks in large part to a pair of highly lucrative NFL investigations, attorney Ted Wells was able to purchase the swanky New York City apartment that formerly belonged to tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams for a meager $2.1 million, according to the New York Daily News.
Wells, of course, was the independent investigator hired by the NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell to gather evidence as to whether or not New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was involved in the alleged deflation of footballs to a level below what is deemed legal by the league. His independence has since been questioned, most recently by US Judge Richard Berman at Wednesday's Deflategate mediation in Manhattan.
Part of why Wells' independence was questioned was his prior work with the league investigating bullying within the Miami Dolphins organization, specifically as it pertained to offensive lineman Jonathan Martin and his tormentor, Richie Incognito. A former Dolphins assistant coach recently filed a defamation lawsuit against Wells.
Citing public records filed with NYC Wednesday, the News reports that Wells and his wife purchased a one-bedroom, one bathroom, 1,800-square foot apartment for just over $2 million from the Williams'.
The apartment, located in the Garment District, was purchased by Venus and Serena in 2005 for a price approximately $750,000 lower than the $2.1 million Wells is paying. Per the News, the Williams' at one time rented out the space for a price of $7,000 a month.
Wells is co-chair of the litigation department at New York-based Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. His wife, Nina, is the former secretary of state of New Jersey.
