Stan Wawrinka called out Nick Kyrgios Thursday for a rude comment that he made during the pair's second-round matchup on Wednesday at Rogers Cup in Montreal, Canada.
The comment was directed towards Wawrinka's girlfriend and picked up by a courtside microphone, The Huffington Post reported. Kyrgios was heard saying, "Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend. Sorry to tell you that, mate."
Wawrinka urged the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) to punish Kyrgios for his actions, and they later released a statement that Kyrgios had been fined, according to BBC News.
Kyrgios apologized after he was fined, stating that he takes "full responsibility" for his actions and regrets his comments.
"My comments were made in the heat of the moment and were unacceptable on many levels," he said.
Kyrgios claims that his comments were made due to verbal altercations that took place with Wawrinka and says that he was provoked.
"He was getting a bit lippy with me," he said. "Kind of in the heat of the moment, I don't know, I just said it."
Wawrinka took to Twitter to publicly denounce the 20-year-old tennis pro's words, calling them "not only unacceptable but also beyond belief."
This is not the first time that Kyrgios has been in the spotlight due to his questionable actions. He was booed during a fourth-round loss to Richard Gasquet after making little attempt to return Gasquet's serve, CBC News reported.
