A 107-year-old man was shot and killed in Arkansas during a standoff with police officials, The Washington Post reported.
Police officers were called to the home of Pauline Lewis in Pine Bluff, Ark. on Saturday after she called and said Monroe Isadore, 107, threatened her and his daughter by pointing his gun at them.
"He was very angry. He got hostile. He was gonna kill somebody," Lewis said, who invited Isadore to live with her last month. Lewis said the incident began after she and his daughter asked him about moving to a new apartment.
"Monroe was in the room and he had the gun and he said 'If you wanna live you better get away from this door,'" Lewis said.
After arriving to the home, officers directed Lewis and Isadore's daughter out of the house as they searched for him. When the officers announced who they were as they approached a bedroom, Isadore shot through the door according to Pine Bluff Lt. David Price.
Police officers called in help from SWAT officers and began negotiating with Isadore. The SWAT team was able to place a camera inside the bedroom and see that Isadore was armed with a handgun.
Once authorities decided a negotiation wouldn't work, SWAT officials filled the bedroom with gas from an outside window. They then entered the house, threw a "distraction device" into the bedroom, and shot Isadore after he began firing at officers.
Deputy Coroner Eric Belcher said Isadore suffered from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at 7:23 p.m.
Price said the investigation is still pending. No members of law enforcement were injured.
Witnesses said the gunfire was heard throughout the neighborhood.
"It was a lot. I can't even count on my hands," one resident said. Another witness recalled hearing "at least thirty rounds fired."
Lewis said she believes the officers actions were justified.
"I think they didn't have a choice but to shoot him after they had put the teargas in and everything. He refused and he shot first," Lewis added.
