Nevada Sheriff Deputy Shot, Killed After Responding To Domestic Call

A Nevada sheriff's deputy was killed after responding to a domestic violence call on Saturday.

The sheriff's officials announced that the deputies were only responding to a report of battery and to verify if an injured woman was there. Before the Carson City deputies got inside the house, the male suspect open fired outside and killed one of them, according to The Guardian.

The unnamed neighbor who witnessed the incident said gunshots woke her up and when she tried to look where it was coming from, the deputy was already falling to the ground after being shot. She saw how one of the deputies pulled the body of the victim away from the house before the other deputies retaliated.

After the gunfire ended, the officers were able to rescue three children inside the house ranging from 8 to 13 years old, ABC News reported.

The Carson City deputies were comforting each other on location after the incident. The details of the deputy's death were not released immediately. The deputy had a wife and four young children.

"It's a ripple that's kind of hit all of us very, very hard," said Michael Sean Giurlani, president of Nevada State Law Enforcement Officers' Association. This was the first death of a Carson City deputy ever since 1867.

"The Nevada family lost one of its finest public servants today," Governor Brian Sandoval of Nevada said on Saturday.

"The death of this dedicated officer is a sobering reminder of the sacrifices our men and women in uniform courageously make each and every day as they protect our communities," he added.

A vigil will be held at Carson City's Nevada Law Enforcement Memorial in Carson City on 8 p.m. Saturday.

There is still an ongoing investigation by the Reno Police Department, the New York Daily News reported.
