Marvel gave its first look at the fractured Avengers team in "Captain America: Civil" at D23 Expo on Saturday. The trailer featured not only Captain America and Iron Man but also Crossbones, a quick peek at Black Panther and Martin Freeman's character.
The footage begins with Captain America (Chris Evans), Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) taking on Crossbones (Frank Grillo) in the middle of a foreign market place, according to io9. As Cap goes to take out his mechanical-armed foe, Crossbones mentions Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), which stops Steve Rogers in his tracks.
The trailer then features a voice over by General Ross (William Hurt), who hasn't been seen since the second Marvel studios film, "The Incredible Hulk." He speaks over a scene of Cap and his team walking through the Avengers headquarters.
"The world owed you an unplayable debt. People see you as a hero. There are some who prefer the word vigilante-people are afraid," Ross says.
Steve responds, "This job, you try to save as many as we can. Sometimes that doesn't mean everyone."
His best friend Bucky then appears as the trailer shows the end credits from "Ant-Man." Bucky a.k.a. The Winter Soldier had his arm caught in a vice while Cap and Falcon discussed how to get him out.
Steve and Bucky then make a connection, when Bucky remembers his friend's mother's name is Sara. Another scene shows the heroes from the past walking through a bunker in the snow.
Following some quick shots of Vision (Paul Bettany), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Falcon and other Avengers, Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) is finally revealed and his confrontation with Captain American begins. The film revolves around the two heroes at odds over whether the superheroes should register with the government or continue acting on their own accord.
The only major character missing from the trailer is Spider-Man, whose portrayer Tom Holland is confirmed to have a cameo in the movie. Scott Lang a.k.a. Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) makes his first appearance in the closing moments, arriving in the back of a van delivered by Hawkeye and he can't stop gushing over Cap and Black Widow.
"I know you know a lot of super people, so thanks for thinking of me," Lang finally tells them.
Marvel has not officially released the footage. Feige called the upcoming Marvel film the end of the "Captain America" trilogy and the "culmination of everything that has come before in the Cinematic Universe."
"Captain America: Civil War" will premiere in theaters on May 6, 2016.
