At a post-practice press conference, Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh went way off topic when asked about how rusty his team was during the preseason so far. Harbaugh eventually got onto the topic of politics and proclaimed he supported Donald Trump's idea of building a wall on the border of the United States and Mexico, according to Barry Petchesky of Deadspin.
This whole conversation started when Harbaugh got onto the topic of the NFL referees not being able to work at training camps to prepare for the season. From there Harbaugh compared that to Congress, and things spiraled out of control until he landed on Trump.
"I'm going Trump here, build a wall, it's not that hard. You don't have a border, you don't have a country. You're not a country without a border, right? At the same time, you got 12 to 15 million hard-working people here. Give them a shot. Give them a chance, right, to become a citizen so they're paying taxes. All of us know that it's not complicated. But this side doesn't want to solve it and neither does this side. Solve the problem," said Harbaugh.
These comments from Harbaugh are interesting because many professional athletes and sports teams have tried to distance themselves from Trump and his position on immigration. ESPN and the PGA specifically have moved events away from Trump's courses while other organizations with ties to Trump have made statements saying they do not agree with his immigration stance, according to Travis Waldron of the Huffington Post.
Despite these comments from Harbaugh, he reportedly is not as cutthroat with his views on immigration as Trump is. Harbaugh has said that he supports there being a pathway to gaining citizenship in the United States while Trump wants to deport everyone already in the United States that is undocumented.
