Paralympic runner, Oscar Pistorius, is to be released from a South African prison on Friday after serving 10 months of his five year sentence for fatally shooting his girlfriend, according to CNN.
He was sentenced to five years in prison back in October 2014 after being convicted of killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, two years ago. He is expected to enter house arrest once released.
The early release it not unusual; the overcrowding of South African prisons are most likely the cause for his release into house arrest, according to the Washington Post. His house arrest will be served in his uncle's house in a Pretoria suburb.
When released, he will have to submit to several conditions, including "electronic monitoring, community service, required employment - and no alcohol, drugs, or firearms," according to The Washington Post.
Pistorius's legal woes are far from over. Prosecutors are pushing for a murder conviction, according to USA Today. Pistorius was originally convicted of culpable-homicide, a charge equivalent to manslaughter, under a section of the Criminal Procedure Act.
A November Supreme Court appeal hearing is set to take place in order to elevate the conviction. They hope to overturn the original conviction and pursue a murder conviction. If successful, Pistorius could be subject to at least 15 years in prison, according to USA Today.
