A six-clawed lobster was caught off the coast of Maine, and was donated to an aquarium known for housing unusual crustaceans.
"Lola" was reeled in by the F/V Rachel Leah, a ship featured on the reality television series "Lobster Wars." The lobster, believed to be about 10-years-old, will reside at the Maine State Aquarium, the Bangor Daily News reported.
"This claw deformity is a genetic mutation," Hayden-Roderiques said. "Sometimes they have this throughout their life, sometimes this happens during a regeneration from a damaged or lost claw," Aquarium Manager Aimee Hayden-Roderiques, told WMTW.
David Libby, a marine scientist at the aquarium who was been working with aquatic animals for 40 years, was surprised by Lola's appearance.
"Sometimes the genes will just get a little mixed and it will grow a funny claw," he told the Bangor Daily News. "But I've never seen anything like this."
Lola will live among other out-of-the-ordinary lobsters.
"We're kind of the place for unusual lobsters," Hayden-Roderiques told the Bangor Daily News. "We think the colored ones are about one in a million, but there's no way to know."
Colored lobsters stand out among the crowd, and are believed to be an easy target for predators. The aquarium staff is unsure if Lola's deformed claw left her at a disadvantage.
"Nature sure can surprise you sometimes. Come take a peek at our newest surprise- 'Lola'- a lobster with 6 claws," the Maine State Aquarium posted on their Facebook.
Lola seems to be adjusting to her new environment. She should feel right at home among at the aquarium, which is also home to a two-toned lobster, a calico, an albino, a blue lobster, and a big fellow that weighs 17 pounds.
The chance of catching a two-toned lobster is much lower than catching a (still unusual) blue or yellow one, but a fisherman is only half as likely to catch an albino, Reuters reported.
