The New Orleans Pelicans summer league team was very successful as they reached the semifinals before losing to the Phoenix Suns. One of the main reasons for their success was Seth Curry who led the whole league in scoring, but another big reason was Bryce Dejean-Jones. Curry has signed with the Sacramento Kings after the Pelicans couldn't agree to a deal with him but they have reportedly been able to agree to a deal with Dejean-Jones, according to John Reid of NOLA.com.
The deal with Dejean-Jones is reportedly a three year pact with partial guarantees so he will still have to earn his way onto the roster. In six summer league games Dejean-Jones averaged 12.8 points per game while making 62 percent of his field goal attempts and 50 percent of his three point attempts.
Dejean-Jones is a 6 foot-6 guard that bounced around in his college career having played for three schools in five years. He played his freshman season at USC before transferring to UNLV for his sophomore and junior season and eventually played his senior year at Iowa State where he was very effective for a good Cyclones team. As a senior Dejean-Jones averaged 10.5 points and 4.7 rebounds per game on 48 percent shooting from the field.
Dejean-Jones went undrafted in the 2015 NBA Draft but thanks to his stellar play in the summer league and the Pelicans having room on their roster he has a real chance to make the team out of training camp. The former Cyclone is only the 13th player the Pelicans have under contract and they are able to keep 15. The Pelicans are still likely looking to add more players before training camp for some competition but they have to like what they have seen from Dejean-Jones so far.
Norris Cole is still likely to be back with the Pelicans next season as well but as of right now his contract remains unresolved so the Pelicans can't bank on him being back. If Dejean-Jones makes the roster he will provide depth for the Pelicans at the guard position where they are lacking depth big time with Jrue Holiday, Eric Gordon and Tyreke Evans being the only guards currently on the roster.
