For years Hollywood has been kicking around the idea of an Aretha Franklin biopic with the iconic singer herself even trying to recruit Halle Berry for the lead role and Denzel Washington for the part of her father. While Washington could still step into the role, new reports hint that Academy Award-winner Jennifer Hudson is the front runner to land the coveted lead role.
"Straight Outta Compton" producer Scott Bernstein is developing the movie, and while nothing is official at the moment, The Wrap has confirmed that Hudson has had discussions about the project. The story will focus on Franklin's popular rise through music in the 1960s and 70s and her abusive relationship with first husband Ted White.
Hudson first garnered national attention as an "American Idol" contestant. But in 2006 she co-starred with Eddie Murphy and Beyone Knowles in the well-received "Dreamgirls" which landed her an Oscar win for Best Supporting Actress. She has recently been seen in the hit Fox series "Empire" and also just finished work on the new Spike Lee joint, "Chiraq."
Unfortunately, Hudson's last attempt at a biopic did not fare so well. "Winnie Mandala" was poorly received by critics and was not released until two years after its Toronto International Film Festival debut.
There is no timetable for the Franklin biopic as of yet, but a schedule will surely be made if the project can land Hudson. We'll keep you updated as more details emerge.
