The Philadelphia 76ers roster currently sits at 16 players, which is one more than they can carry into the regular season. Of those 16 players, only 12 of them are on guaranteed contracts and the 76ers are apparently not done looking to upgrade their roster. It is being reported that general manager Sam Hinkie is still "heavily engaged" with teams regarding potential trades and free agents as well, according to Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Hinkie said that although the big names are now off the board, the NBA offseason doesn't just stop and that he is still looking with more than a month before training camp begins.
"I know the big names all disappear in the first two or three days, but NBA trades and free agency those are the kind of things that happen every day in the offseason. And we are still active there," said Hinkie.
Hinkie would not say what specifically the 76ers are looking for in a trade or free agent, but one could assume that it is a point guard. The 76ers are pretty set in the frontcourt having just drafted Jahlil Okafor to go with Nerlens Noel, but the point guard position is a major question mark. Last year's starter Tony Wroten is recovering from a torn ACL, and it is unknown whether he will be ready for the season.
Besides Wroten the 76ers have Isaiah Canaan and Pierre Jackson on the roster as point guards. Canaan hasn't shown much in his NBA career, and Jackson is also coming off a serious leg injury and cannot be relied upon. Regardless of whether Wroten is ready to start the season or not, it seems like the 76ers still need help at the point guard position, and they have been linked to Norris Cole who is a restricted free agent.
Hinkie refused to disclose what he has in the works, but it seems like he has something fairly big going on based on the words he used. The 76ers still have more than $13 million in cap room for the 2015-16 season so they certainly have the ability to bring in a player that makes big money it is just a matter of who is available and what the 76ers would have to give up.
