Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller could face a lengthier suspension after receiving a citation for speeding and driving without a license. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has the option to increase Miller's current six-game suspension, ESPN reports.
Miller, who's in the middle of a six-game suspension for violating the league's substance-abuse policy, was issued the traffic citation last week. Miller's father, a passenger in the car, drove him home after the traffic stop.
Because of Miller's past transgressions, including an arrest in August for failing to appear in court for multiple driving citations, the 24-year-old could face harsher discipline for being a "repeat offender."
"...While traffic violations alone wouldn't usually draw attention under the league's conduct policy, the policy does cover pattern behavior and allows the commissioner to impose discipline at his discretion," Jeff Legwold of ESPN wrote on Wednesday. "The policy states discipline is a possibility for 'conduct that undermines or puts at risk the integrity and reputation of the NFL, NFL clubs, or NFL players.'"
If Goodell decides Miller violated the league's conduct policy, the commissioner could tack on more games to Miller's suspension.
The Broncos, who haven't commented on Miller's latest citation, are also trying to recoup from Miller a signing bonus worth nearly $1.25 million. The team argues the right to reclaim the money because of Miller's suspension and plans to withhold the money from Miller's weekly game checks.
Miller has already started to consult with NFLPA attorneys to determine if the Broncos can legally withhold the signing bonus from his game checks.
If Goodell doesn't add to Miller's suspension, Miller is expected to return in Week 7.
