The New York Giants running back group appears to be in flux. Coach Tom Coughlin wouldn't elaborate on David Wilson, who Coughlin called "careless", and with an injury to backup Da'Rel Scott, newly signed Brandon Jacobs could see more playing time.
After characterizing Wilson as "careless" and a "marked man" by defenses, Coughlin became noticeably agitated by the relentless questions about Wilson's standing with the team.
"Geez. Man, oh man, oh man, oh man," Coughlin said on Wednesday, via the New York Daily News. "I can't say anymore about David Wilson, except that if I watch him in practice and his technique doesn't improve, I'll let you know. OK? I'll let you know.
"In practice he's going to have to have the ball in that position all the time, not just when he thinks he's running free and there's nobody around him. I want to see the ball in the right spot all the time.
"And quite frankly there's nowhere else to go with this. I don't know what else to say to you. I realize it's a major issue for everybody. But there's a way to carry the ball and there's a way to protect the ball. Ball security is No. 1. And that's what he's going to have to demonstrate."
It's uncertain when Wilson will see the field again, but the Giants appear unable to keep him sidelined for too long. Scott, the running back who replaced Wilson on Sunday, suffered a knee injury on Wednesday during practice. He was taken for testing and the seriousness of the injury is unknown, according to Ralph Vacchiano of The News.
If Scott is unavailable for any games, it's probable that Jacobs, who the club signed on Tuesday, will see more time on the field. The 31-year-old back was originally signed to add depth and a veteran presence to the running back group, but given the state of the team's backs - Wilson in the doghouse, Scott potentially out with an injury and Michael Cox an unproven rookie - Jacobs could find himself with a sizeable workload.
