Lionel Richie Gives Billy Ray Cyrus Parenting Advice: Promises Things Will Get Better For His Daughter Miley Cyrus as She Faces Backlash for 'Wrecking Ball' Video

Lionel Richie knows exactly what Billy Ray Cyrus is going through and is offering the country singer some parenting advice. According to USA Today, Richie spoke to omg! Insider and decided to give Cyrus some tips on how to best handle the situation and negative attention his daughter Miley Cyrus is getting.

"Dad to Dad, I've been Billy Ray," he said. "When you have a teenage daughter growing up in Hollywood, in the business, I mean, what I went through with Nicole, God bless Billy Ray. Honestly, there is no control."

Richie knows from personal experience how difficult it can be. His own daughter Nicole Richie, 31, struggled for years with drug addiction. In a 2007 interview with Diane Sawyer for "20/20" the former reality star explained how "boredom" and "lavish trappings" led to her addiction, People magazine reports.

"I got so much so fast that nothing really excited me anymore," she said. "I kind of took matters into my own hands and was creating drama in a very dangerous way. At 18 I had just been doing a lot of cocaine."

She ended up seeking treatment and is now a successful clothing designer, wife and mother. Her father promised Cyrus that things will get better for him and his daughter. Miley Cyrus is currently facing backlash about her music video for "Wrecking Ball" where she is seen riding a wrecking ball naked and licking a sledgehammer.

"[Miley] is just going through a period in her life and we're actually going to grit our teeth and hold our breath. I did the same thing, it's one of those things where you have to say, 'Please God let it be over soon.' That's where she is in her space and that is her expression and that's what it's all about."
