The National Zoo in Washington has announced the live birth of a brand new panda cub.
A Giant panda named Mei Xiang gave birth at 5:34 p.m. on Saturday, with the delivery being broadcast live over the Internet, according to NPR. The birth has since been posted to YouTube.
However, it could be months before the cub makes an actual appearance at the zoo.
At this point, the zoo's veterinarians have yet to separate the cub from Xiang, as they will spend the next two weeks or so bonding. But when they do, they will be able to determine much more about the infant, including its gender and weight, as well as its father. A name can be made for the cub from there.
Xiang was artificially inseminated twice by two different pandas back in April, once by Tian Tian, a giant panda there at the National Zoo and a once by a panda in China, USA Today reported.
Xiang and Tian have had successful pairings before, being the mother and father of two other pandas, Tai Shan and Bao Bao.
The eldest of the panda brothers was sent to China. Per the lease agreement the zoo has with the country, all of Xiang's cubs will eventually go to live in China.
Xiang is a character of note in Washington and well followed by panda enthusiasts worldwide, according to The New York Times.
Zoo officials say that the new mother and her cub are doing well.
