Army Specialist Tyler Roberts served in Afghanistan with a Belgian Malinois dog named Donna. Both of them were deployed together with the 101st Airborne to Southern Afghanistan in 2011.
Roberts and his canine teammate found bombs, explosives and hundreds of pounds of ammonium nitrate, saving countless people from potential harm, reported USA Today.
The two were separated after the tour, but Roberts couldn't forget Donna since he already got attached to the dog.
"We separated in September 2011, and I tried to follow her career so that I could adopt her after she retired, but I could never get a straight answer as to her whereabouts," Roberts said, according to People Pets.
Donna was adopted by a private contracting company after her tour and was one of the dogs that were left with Mount Hope Kennels in Virginia.
Since the dogs were not claimed after fifteen months, the kennel's owner turned the canines over to the United States War Dogs Association in Burlington, N.J. and Mission K9 Rescue in Houston, Texas.
The mission learned that Roberts was looking for Donna, so Mission K9 Rescue president Kristen Maurer brought Donna to Roberts' home for a 1,000-mile drive.
"Our goal is to reunite all of the handlers and soldiers with their war dogs. We love to make that happen for them," said Maurer.
Roberts was very happy to be reunited with the dog after a long four-year search.
