The body of an unidentified woman was discovered Sunday morning on a Plum Island beach, just off the northeast coast of Massachusetts, prompting an investigation, and an autopsy which is set for Monday.
The corpse was found by a couple who were walking in the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, prompting them to call the police, reported The Salem News. Plum Island is a small island off the cost of Massachusetts, about 40 miles north of Boston.
Upon being notified by the couple, Newbury police arrived to investigate the scene and remained there for most of Sunday.
Carrie Kimball Monahan, a spokeswoman for the Essex County District Attorney's office, said the body was discovered partially unclothed, but there as no evidence of foul play, according to Fox News.
Investigators also didn't reveal any details about her apparent age, physical appearance, or how long her body had been in the water until her discovery.
"If it becomes necessary, we may share those details with the public," she said.
By 6 p.m. police cleared the scene of the area which was left unusually empty due to unseasonably cool temperatures and wet weather, according to The Boston Globe.
Steven LeBlanc, who was fishing for striped bass nearby, noted the area was "definitely not a good place to stash a body" due to the number of people who are at the typically crowded beach during the summer.
This isn't the first time human remains have been discovered on Plum Island. In December of 2014, several body parts washed up throughout one weekend. Authorities said the remains were from an adult male, but they failed to make a positive identification.
