Louisiana State Trooper Steven Vincent, 43, died earlier after being shot in the head when he stopped to help Kevin Daigle, 54, who was allegedly stranded after he drove into a ditch.
Col. Michael Edmonson, the police force's superintendent, released a statement following Vincent's death.
"As an organization, we are heartbroken over this senseless and tragic death," the statement said, according to CNN. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his surviving wife, Katherine, and his son Ethan as well as his entire extended family."
Police released a dashcam video of Vincent trying to talk Daigle out of his truck, and when he did leave the truck, he came armed with a shotgun, the video illustrated.
"That shotgun wasn't to do anything else but hurt someone. Kill someone," Edmonson said about the scene, according to the Associated Press.
The video then shows Vincent getting shot.
"I saw my trooper go backwards and back toward his unit, where he was going to try to get some help out there," Edmonson said.
After the shooting, Daigle walked into the road and over to Vincent, asking if he was alive.
"You could hear [Daigle] breathing, telling him, 'You're lucky. You're lucky - you're going to die soon.' That's the words that came out of his mouth," Edmonson said.
Upon seeing the incident, about three drivers stopped immediately and arrived on scene to help. One of the drivers wrestled the shotgun away from Daigle, and, with the others, got him to the ground, and restrained him using Vincent's handcuffs.
Afterwards, they used Vincent's raido to call other officers to the scene, according to CBS News.
Edmonson said Daigle had "numerous DWIs" and other arrests, but didn't know the specifics behind them. Authorities plan to formally charge Daigle with first-degree murder after he is released from the hospital.
