The medical examiner involved in the Trayvon Martin case was fired and immediately hired a lawyer who threatened a lawsuit, CNN reported.
Officials said on Wednesday that Shiping Bao lost his job as the associate medical examiner for the Volusia County Medical Examiner's Office last week.
His letter of termination, which was provided by authorities, did not list a specific reason for his firing. The letter indicates Bao was given the choice to resign. When he refused, he was let go Friday.
Bao's lawyer has since filed a complaint against the county.
"This is a formal request to ask you to preserve any and all documents...and/or evidence related to Dr. Bao's claims and/or the Trayvon Martin Case," the filed complaint read.
Bao was a part of the high-profile Trayvon Martin case in Florida and performed the teen's autopsy. During his testimony, he changed his mind about certain aspects of the case, like how long Martin survived after he was shot, whether or not he could have moved afterward, and what role marijuana played in his judgment the night he was killed.
During the trial, Bao said he "didn't see the problem" in changing his mind.
"If you have new information, new experiences, you read a new book, you change your opinion," Bao said. "If someone never changes opinion, you can call them mentally retarded. You never learn, right?"
Don West, one of Zimmerman's attorneys, criticized Bao for altering his opinion on Martin's toxicology reports. Bao originally said the amount of marijuana in Martin's system was not great enough to impair his judgment but later said it could have.
Willie E. Gary, Bao's lawyer, plans to file a lawsuit citing discrimination, job harassment, and wrongful termination.
Bao began his employment with Volusia County in July 2011.
