A child was used in a suicide bomb attack that killed at least five people Tuesday at a crowded entrance to a bus station in Damaturu in northeast Nigeria.
Assistant Superintendent Toyin Gbagedesin also confirmed that 41 people were wounded in the explosion, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Witnesses reported seeing a "young girl" approaching the station in the Yobe state capital Damaturu around 7 a.m. who refused to be searched by security guards at the gate before blowing herself up.
"A private taxi... drove out of the park. As soon as the car came close, she detonated the explosives. Six people in the car were killed. She was also killed," bystander Sani Dankamasho told AFP, according to Yahoo! News.
Various reports indicate the bomber was around 12 to 14 years of age.
Many believe that responsibility for the attack falls on Boko Haram, who have escalated the frequency of its attacks since President Muhammadu Buhari was elected in March with a pledge to eradicate the militants, according to Fox News
Boko Haram has used dozens of girls and women in recent suicide bombings in Nigeria and neighboring Chad, Cameroon and Niger, raising fears it is using kidnapped victims to carry out the attacks.
