Authorities in Russia have begun removing foreign detergent and washing powder brands from stores due to claims that they pose health risks, according to the Associated Press.
The Consumer Protection Agency on Tuesday said that recent inspections of select top foreign brands like Henkel AG, Colgate-Palmolive and Procter & Gamble were found to have high levels of toxic ingredients, according to the AP.
Earlier this month, Moscow extended its ban on selected imports of food from the EU and other countries, according to The Guardian. A ban has not been placed, however, on the imports of detergent and washing agents. Many of the producers mentioned have facilities in Russia.
These restrictions come at a very tense time between Russia, the U.S. and the European Union over the conflict in Ukraine, according to Bloomberg. These prolonged import bans are being used, many say, as a retaliation against the sanctions placed against Russia by the U.S. and the EU.
To drive their point home, officials in Russia have called for the public destruction of illegally imported food products, according to Bloomberg.
The companies listed by the CPA have not released statements in response to these allegations, according to the AP.
