Mayweather Canelo Fight: Trash Talk Heats Up, Alvarez’s Management Called ‘Inept’

Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez square off on Saturday for what could be a record-breaking pay-per-view event. The trash talk picked up on Thursday with Mayweather claiming that nobody can "out box" him, and his camp took a jab at Alvarez's "idiot" management, CBS Sports reports.

"It's fight time, what else can I say?" Mayweather said, via CBS Sports. "If the game plan is to keep pressure, I can handle it. If the game plan is to out box me, nobody can out box me. You have to be able to out match me mentally, and I'm the strongest mental fighter in the sport of boxing."

With a 44-0 record and 26 KO's, Mayweather can back his claim. The 36-year-old is boxing's biggest draw and looked sharp in May when he defeated Robert Guerrero.

Still, Mayweather - at least on paper - is up against a tough challenge. Alvarez is 13 years younger than Mayweather and boasts an equally impressive record at 42-0-1 with 30 knock outs.

Mayweather's father, who's also his head trainer, sounded just as confident as his son. He also wasn't impressed by Alvarez's record.

"Alvarez has got a name and the same amount of fights as my son, but that's it," Mayweather Sr. said. "The guys he fought were bums. He was fighting Mexicans in Mexico. While my son was fighting all top-caliber fighters, Alvarez was in kindergarten and first grade. And now my son's gonna whoop his ass."

Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather's promotional company, also took a jab - at Alvarez's management. Ellerbe said it was Alvarez's manager that offered to fight at 152 pounds, something that was an "idiot" move and puts the 23-year-old Mexican at a disadvantage.

"We take advantage of those kinds of things. Why would we go in a different direction?" Ellerbe said. "They suggested it, why would we say no and do something different? They put him at a disadvantage. His management did. Floyd would have fought him regardless, but his management put that out there. So if you have an idiot manager, that's what it is. (Alvarez is) an excellent young fighter. But he's in over his head. He's in over his head. Come Sept. 14, Canelo's got a problem."

The fight takes place on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 9 p.m. ET.
