After four decades, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will the first Indian prime minister to schedule a visit to the United States West Coast.
Modi, scheduled to visit on September 26-27, will not only hold a performance for another diaspora show but will try to grab the attention of investors and experts for Digital India, as well as other innovation assignments and renewable energy collaborations with high ranking officials in Silicon Valley.
The west coast is home to several prosperous non-resident Indians (NRIs), across many sectors, inlcuding IT. Modi will try to attract them during the trip, which is after the UN summit on September 25 in New York City.
He will be going back to the east coast on the 28th where he is expected to have a meeting with President Obama, according to the Economic Times.
This visit to San Francisco would bring back to life the huge 40-year gap since an in-office Prime Minister visited U.S. cities aside from New York City or Washington, D.C. Ex-Indian Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, on the other hand, conducted a visit to Houston and Boston in 1994, according to India West.
More than 40,000 people have signed up for Modi's talk to the Indian-American community on the 27th. This is more than last year's 30,000 registrants in New York. With so much time left, the organizers of the event are still aiming to reach 20,000 people more to reach the 50,000 mark, New Indian Express reported.
"This is a phenomenal response. It's simply Modi Magic," said Vijay Chauthaiwale of the foreign relations department of BJP. He is in Silicon Valley to attend to the preparations for the Prime Minister's visit.
A selfie video contest has been included to make the even more appealing.
"Record a selfie video of less than one minute on your idea of India - on what India means to you. The best video could win a $100 gift card and two guaranteed passes to the event. Selected videos will be featured on this page regularly," said on the Indo-American Community of West Coast's Facebook page.
