San Francisco Giants' shortstop Brandon Crawford injured his oblique on Tuesday and hopes to avoid the disabled list. The same cannot be said for Detroit Tigers' starting pitcher Shane Greene, who will now miss the rest of the season. These two highlight Thursday's MLB injury report.
Crawford left Tuesday night's game against the Chicago Cubs with what he called "tightness of the left oblique," according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Such injuries are known to keep players out for at least a couple of weeks, but Crawford said the ailment is "mild" and it "should just be a couple of days."
It's likely Crawford won't be in today's lineup for the team's 3:45 p.m. ET matchup against the Cubs, but he and the team hope he can avoid the DL and return as soon as Friday, adds Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area.
"I've strained my oblique before in 2013 and this didn't feel like that," Crawford said. "This one is a little more mild."
The 28-year-old is batting .265/.324/.482 with 58 runs scored, 19 home runs and 75 RBIs in 121 games this season and has been a crucial aspect of the Giants' push toward an NL West title.
In Detroit, the news is much worse. Starting pitcher Shane Greene, who was acquired from the New York Yankees in the offseason, will undergo season-ending surgery to repair arterial damage in his right shoulder, according to James Schmehl of MLive.com and Jason Beck of MLB.com.
Greene had recently been suffering from a pseudoaneurysm in his hand that was a result of damage to the circumflex artery in his shoulder, writes Katie Strang of ESPN. Although Tigers' head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said this is a rare diagnosis, it is not a career-threatening injury.
This is the icing on the cake for Greene's 2015 campaign. The 26-year-old was having a terrible season (4-8 with a 6.88 ERA and 1.55 WHIP in 18 games) and was sent to the minors for a month in June. He gave up only one earned run in his first three starts of the season (23 innings), but it soon all came crashing down and he surrendered 43 earned runs in his next 10 starts (46 innings).
Greene will join fellow starters Anibal Sanchez and Daniel Norris on the disabled list. The Tigers said he'll be able to begin physical activity within two weeks after the surgery but he cannot throw for at least two months.
