Many around the NFL thought that New England Patriots running back Jonas Gray was poised for a breakout following his four-touchdown performance against the Indianapolis Colts last year. Alas, a missed meeting led to Pats coach Bill Belichick putting Gray in the dog house and LeGarrette Blount eventually being re-signed. Gray received just scattered playing time during the remainder of the season.
But ESPN Fantasy Football writer Mike Clay believes Gray could once again become a playmaker for this New England offense and a viable fantasy football option. He compares Gray to Justin Forsett during his breakout season last year.
"Locating a running back with top-10 upside among players going undrafted in most leagues is no simple task," Clay wrote. "Gray doesn't have quite the journeyman resume that Forsett did when he exploded onto the fantasy scene at age 29 last year, but Gray fits the bill as a player who has performed exceptionally when called upon, is in a situation that could allow a big workload in a strong offense and is available late in drafts. After pummeling Indianapolis to the tune of 201 yards and four touchdowns on 37 carries in Week 11 last season, Gray managed only 20 carries the rest of the regular season. LeGarrette Blount is an obstacle for Gray, but the veteran is suspended for Week 1, leaving the door open for Gray to steal a significant role. He's an overlooked, high-ceiling flier in the later rounds of the draft."
In eight total games, Gray carried the ball 89 times for 412 yards (4.6 YPC) and five total touchdowns. Belichick is known for playing musical chairs with his running backs so a good showing from Gray in Blount's absence could lead to more playing time than initially expected.
