No time to exercise after work? No problem. A growing number of American are bringing the gym to work.
Various exercise desks allow people to walk, run, cycle, or just stand as they work, the Associated Press via CNBC reported
Andrew Lockerbie, senior vice president of benefits at Brown & Brown, a global insurance consulting firm told the AP exercising at work is "being productive on two fronts."
"I'm in meetings and at my desk and on the phone all day," he said. "It's great to be able to have an option at my work to get some physical activity while I'm actually doing office stuff. You feel better, you get your blood moving, you think clearly."
Sitting for extended periods of time can cause obesity and lead to other serious health problems.
"There's a glob of information that sitting is killing us," Levine said. Dr. James Levine, an endocrinologist at the Mayo Clinic, said."You're basically sitting yourself into a coffin."
The office exercise equipment is designed to only go one or two mph, which will get a users heart rate up but will not distract them from their work.
"Even walking at one mile an hour has very substantial benefits," Levine said. "Although you don't sweat, your body moving is sort of purring along."
TreadDesk, an exercise desk company, predicts to see a 25 percent increase in sales this year. The company is already supported by "Microsoft, Coca Cola, United Healthcare and Procter & Gamble," which have been buying the product "in bulk."
Treadmill desks usually range in price from $800 to $5,000. Smaller models that can fit under a desk can go for as low as $149, built-in desk models can cost as much as $1,400.
Some people are simply sitting on exercise balls at work.
"I've got nurses in my operating room who will use one of those balls instead of a chair," said Michael Maloney, a professor of orthopedics and sports medicine specialist at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
Some workers feel they get too distracted when exercising at work, these employees can use standing desks.
"Within two minutes of standing, one activates a series of metabolic processes that are beneficial. Once you sit, all of those things get switched off," Levine said.
