Police in the nation's capital are on the hunt for an active shooter who opened fire at the Navy Yard on Monday morning, wounding one officer and injuring others, The Washington Post reported.
Authorities confirmed the shooting of an officer at 9:30 a.m., one hour after a gunman shot at another three people at 8:20 a.m. in the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters, where nearly 3,000 people work.
According to police, three or four people were shot, all of whom are in critical condition and security in the surrounding area is being assessed.
A "shelter in place" order was issued to personnel at the Navy Yard immediately after the shooting. The entrance to the Navy Yard metro station is still open but the 11th St Bridge, as well as M St SE between 2nd and 4th streets SE, are closed. In addition, Tyler Elementary School on 10th and G streets is on lockdown.
Police on Capitol Hill confirmed security was enhanced but are not under an immediate threat.
An unnamed employee at the Navy Yard said he heard the shots followed by the fire alarm.
"We aren't going back on base today," he said. "[But] there are still people inside."
The Washington Post said despite reports of the gunman being captured, D.C. police are still looking for the suspect who is "hiding between floors."
