Miss America 2014 Winner Nina Davuluri: Why First Indian-Woman Crowned Will Rise Above The Hate; Top 10 Racist Tweets Against Her

The title of Miss America 2014 goes Nina Davuluri, and the first Indian-American woman to win the competition has received social media backlash because of her Indian descent.

The racist tweets are about the 24-year-old Miss New York pageant contest are hateful, but she is not. Davuluri embraces diversity and so should "true Americans."

"I'm so happy this organization has embraced diversity," she said in her first press conference being crowned at Atlantic City, N.J.'s Boardwalk Hall. "I'm thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America."

Before someone should use the argument "this is America, not India," they should know Davuluri is American, but of Indian descent. According to the Associated Press, Davuluri is a native of Syracuse, N.Y., wants to become a doctor and will do so with the $50,000 scholarship she won with her pageant title.

The hate being spewed onto social media sites like Twitter shows the ignorance that lives on in a post 9/11 world. Davuluri's skin color, descent and beliefs had nothing to do with the terror attacks, and yet some Twitter users want to twist a tragedy to make an excuse for their hatred.

Many saw Miss Kansas Theresa Vail as the "true winner" of the pageant because she represents the "true American." And they are right in a way; Vail is an outstanding woman who has served our country and deserves every bit of praise she has received.

However, if Davuluri and Vail switched roles, and now an Indian woman who had tattoos, wore a military uniform and loved to hunt would she receive the same racially motivated backlash? Yes, she would have and not being any of those things doesn't make her less "American."

She's a smart, talented American young lady who like any strong woman, knows what she is worth and won't let hate ruin her time as Miss America.

"I have to rise above that," Davuluri told the press. "I always viewed myself as first and foremost American."

Here the Top 10 most hateful tweets I have seen against Davuluri, in no particular order:
