Randall Cobb is expected to be ready for week one against the Chicago Bears, according to a report from Fox Sports' Alex Marvez. Cobb suffered an A/C sprain on a sideline pass against the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday.
Cobb's injury could heavily impact Green Bay's offense as they lost top receiver Jordy Nelson early this preseason. Nelson's torn ACL will make Cobb's job much more difficult. NFL Teams will likely game plan for Cobb as he is clearly Rodgers best target now.
This will be Cobb's fifth season in the league, and last year was his best as he grabbed 12 touchdowns. He also had a career high in receptions in 91 and yards with 1,287 yards. Cobb said his status was day-to-day, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.
Rodgers will likely need a healthy Cobb if the Packers want to start the season in the right direction. The Packers start at Soldier Field against their NFC North Rival the Bears, and the season won't get easier as they follow that with two top defenses in Seattle and Kansas City.
Cobb flirted with free agency this offseason, but resigned with the Packers for $40million over four years, according to NFL reporter Gregg Rosenthal. The reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers will need help from his surrounding cast without Nelson and an ailing Cobb.
The Packers third-round draft pick this offseason was Ty Montgomery, and he will likely see playing time quickly this upcoming season. The rookie out of Stanford had an impressive collegiate resume and a 216 pound frame that seems built for the NFL. At Stanford Montgomery had 2,125 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns, and this was at a ground and pound school like Stanford.
Tight ends Richard Rodgers and Andrew Quarless will be key for the success of the Packers passing game. These two tight ends combined for five touchdowns and 548 yards receiving. Rodgers will likely want these numbers to improve as big targets will be helpful in the redzone.
Cobb's health will be key to Rodgers and the Packers success. His presence on the field opens space for receivers and tight ends, and open holes for Eddie Lacy and the run game. Cobb is reported to start week one against the Bears, and Packers fans will likely be happy to see that.
