NBA 2K14 Features: Controversial Player Ratings; Did the Developers Get it Right?

2K Sports has recently been releasing some of the ratings coming to “NBA 2K14” this year. You can check them out here. However, there are three ratings that I want to discuss further , here they are:

No. 1—LeBron James 99

It’s no wonder that LeBron James remains the highest rated player in the game. There have been discussions that James should get ratings topping out at 100 or more. His ability to dominate in the post, drive to the basket and shoot the 3 has made him the most unstoppable force in the three major sports. He is much better than everyone else and is definitely more than six points better than Kevin Durant who is at 94.

No. 2—Paul George and Stephen Curry at 88

Paul George and Stephen Curry both had break out seasons last year. George won Most Improved Player and Curry put on one of the most masterful post season shooting performances we’ve seen in a while. But are they on the same level? The truth is, it may be tough to compare. George can shoot the 3 and score overall but he is nowhere near the shooter than Curry is. Curry is a dynamic offensive threat but his ankle (and size) keep him from being the exemplary defensive player George is. They differ in so many areas that they just may be on the same level.

No. 3—Derrick Rose 92

There will be controversy over Derrick Rose’s rating. He hasn’t been in the game for a while—which is an understatement—so people will say, “How do you know he is going to be so good?” That’s a valid question. However, just like NBA 2K shouldn’t guess that he will be good—they also can’t guess that he will be bad. This is a video game, not real life, so they have to go on the information they last had for DRose. And the last time anyone saw him play, he was kind of a beast.

The current-gen version “NBA 2K14” releases Oct. 1 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
