The University of Memphis' football team has suspended six players in relation to the brawl that took place during last year's Miami Beach Bowl, according to the Associated Press. A brawl between BYU and Memphis broke out on national television in a tightly-fought game that Memphis won in double overtime.
Senior linebacker Leonard Pegues got the worst penalty with a 1.5-game suspension, and defensive end Isadore Outing was suspended for a game. Memphis head coach Justin Fuente also announced the suspension of four other players.
Offensive linemen Michael Stannard, Trevon Tate and Nick Thomas, as well as defensive back Chauncey Lanier, will all be suspended for the first half of their first game. Fuente said that Memphis players had also performed 100 more hours of community service then what the school had required of 220 hours, AP reported.
The Tigers, co-champions of the American Athletic Conference, will open the season against Missouri State on Saturday. Their second game is at Kansas, and Fuente will likely need all his starters going into a game against a Big 12 opponent.
